Everyone agreed that we'd left nothing to give but we'd all given everything we knew to give while we were in country in Thailand. We left Stephen there to attend a wedding and now the team begins to head off to different parts of the world. Who knows when we'll be together again like this? Only the good Lord!
It was a busy trip but so worth all that we were able to do. But then again, Sinatra was right when he sang ... "It's oh so nice to go traveling to Paris, London or Rome , but it's oh so nice to come home!"

Our team was back at the slum community today ... this time working in the small school house that serves to reach into the community to work with the children that have little chance of being educated.

Perhaps that needs an explanation ... the slum areas in the outer areas surrounding Bangkok are a prime area for the sex traders. Apparently in the slum areas, children are born to sex trade workers and then either abandoned or "thrown away".  In the west we find that hard to reconcile. Here, while not accepted as the general rule of thumb, children are often left at home to fend for themselves.  This is where Our Home chapel has stepped in.  They have established a school and a foundation to educate the younger children so that they will be less likely to be the "targets" of the sex traders. That's where our team spent the morning.

Today we were also privileged to take a small break and traveled to a tourist area park that has displays of all the significant architectural points throughout Thailand, in miniature.  The gallery from today has some of those items

For the photogs looking in ... all the images are being shot o a Canon 1d MkIV, using either the 24-105/4L IS or the 70-300/4-5.6L IS. These two lenses were chosen for their compact, yet good coverage, not necessarily their speed. Note to self ... I've learnt from this trip that I should  always bring along my ThinkTank Double wide. Everything I needed for this trip packed into my ThinkTank Speed demon, but that's just a little to big to haul on trips where I can get away with one body and a couple of lenses.  Next time I'll pack the doublewide for the walkabouts. Lesson learned.

Tomorrow is a "chill" day before we head north to a 4 day camp. Here's a bunch of images from the school ... be aware you're gonna fall in love with these children.  If you feel like spending just a little cash - about $45 per month, you can underwrite a child's education and help stop some creep messing with a child's life - forever - I'd say that was bargain! The day started out heading into one of the slum communities that Our Home Chapel, the Foursquare denomination's church in Bangkok, Thailand is reaching into.  

The area is a large chunk of land owned by a single man, who leases out small plots to individual families.  People who can afford the lease are able to erect their homes on the piece of land that they've been able to obtain.  The price is quite low and many low income families have taken advantage of the availability.  But inside the communitiy the opportunities to educate the children are slim at best.  

Our Home Chapel seeks out children who have not been enrolled in any school system and helps to educate them through their foundation.

The New Hope Diamond Head Thailand Mission Impact team is attempting to bolster the aspirations of the church in their efforts to survey the slum area and find the children who presently have no chance at even the slightest of educational opportunities.

Unfortunately, just about a fortnight ago, I "swamped" a Canon 5d MkII and a Canon 24-70/2.8 while on a dive assignment just off the Big Island. I had it in my brain, that even though Salt water can be one of the most corrosive of liquids when it reaches and contacts copper electrodes, I (or Canon) would prevail and either my error or the faulty Water Housing would be simply a bump in the rocky road of Professional Magazine Photography. Canon decided that they were out of the picture by returning my body and lens along with a rather curt statement - "Beyond Economical Repair". I snubbed my nose and trolled the web to find a Canon 5dMkII service manual/parts book that showed how to effectively dismantle a 5d mkII .... and I was well on my way ... until this ..... Canon was right again ... and I'm off to bed. Anyone need salty parts ....?

Hey everybody ...

Here we go Stateside, prepping for the big transition to mission on Thursday.  Wow!  Checked our hotel tonight in Bangkok and here's a couple of things for your viewing pleasure.  A map of the downtown area (below) we'll be staying for the 11 day mission trip and a link   (http://www.metropointbangkok.com/)  to the hotel.  Not too shabby I'd say, but at a very reasonable price.  Yeah!  We're hugely thankful for what the good Lord is providing.  At least while we're sleeping, we should do just fikne.

There's an election underway in Thailand. In some areas votes are being bought and sold. Our time in Thailand promises to be highly interesting and very different from our lives in Hawaii. But with the good Lord's help we'll be both safe .... And educated.

I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving! We cruised the East side coming home relaxed and thankful to have spent some time close to the ocean and in the freshest of air. But nothing was funnier than finding this oddly placed sign outside a church. It has a remarkably strong element of truth to it - hopefully it will be far off in the future!
